GLORIA OLIVAE
ΤRAILERS
SYNOPSIS
The film attempts a cinematographic approach of the industrial buildings in the island of Lesvos and their specific architectural development during the last century, in the context of the island’s financial growth.
The importance of these buildings is underlined through a historic presentation of the role of the olive tree, which was and still is the main financial source of the island of Lesvos. In these buildings the olive tree changes shapes and uses and often becomes the motive power for the machines operating within.
The camera guided by the narration of two different generations, the memories of the last century and the contact with the contemporary reality, follows the development of these buildings across time, ranging from their constitution, their functions, their equipment, to their transformation and decadence during the 20th century.
In parallel presentation, the historical events of that period, the documents, the letters and people’s activities, that describe the specific relationship of the olive tree, the industrial development and the development of the island of Lesvos at the beginning of the century.

A highly aesthetic documentary approach, a holistic audiovisual commentary…
G. NOTARAS,
Newspaper “KATHIMERINI” , 06-12-1987
It could be the best Greek documentary which ET1 has ever produced. “Olivae Gloria” is a moving cinematographic interpretation, technically impeccable, with a rich musical mood and well written texts.
A. LELAKI,
Newspaper “VRADYNI” , 24-11-1987
The special viewing of “Olivae Gloria” we saw at ET1 was a true revelation to us all. We urge you not to miss it.

“A requiem for a fading aspect of Greece”
We have seen many documentaries; this one however, combines the inspiration of story-telling with the capture of reality, and is lifted way beyond the usual standard of its type, to become a requiem for a fading aspect of Greece. “Olivae Gloria” hints to the suffering felt by the entire country under foreign rule, its deep wounds from losses and conflicts, and its sorrow and anguish for the uncertainty of the future.
M. PAPADOPOULOU,
Newspaper “TA NEA”, 30-11-1987
It is rare for Greek television to capture its audience as it did with ET1’s “Olivae Gloria”.
Newspaper “APOGEVMATINI”, 24-11-1987
To the impeccable aesthetics and mood which captures its audience, one should add the progressive attitude towards speech in an “informative documentary”, where language is suggestive, indirect, poetic, refined, and stands on its own beside the image without beseeching or betraying it.
E. EUTHIMIOPOULOS,
magazine “ECOLOGY”, November 1987 – No.37
“We should say, hurray!”
” Gloria Olivae ” was a jewel in ET1’s program. A most difficult and ungainly subject to anyone endowed with less sensitivity and talent, the follow-up of the evolution of oil factories in Lesbos became an art movie, a model film.
M. PROTOGIROU,
Newspaper “ELEFTEROTYPIA”, 29-11-1987
A documentary film, in which truth, numbers and reality do not spoil the magic that exists throughout the fairy-tale narration.
