A heretical portrait of the Virgin Mary is being painted and completed in front of the camera, reflecting – at the same time – the beliefs of the Athenians, and the inventive fiction that wants Mary, mother of Jesus, a continuation of ancient gods and a patron saint of poets, women, gypsies and down-and-out people. Their testimonies, along with the lines by the Greek poets Varnalis, Seferis, Elytis), mingle with the believers who crawl on their knees to the Church of the Virgin Mary, on the island of Tinos, every August 15, waiting for a new miracle to come.

A portrait of the Virgin Mary is something that we don’t see very often in Greek TV. With a special technique in the changing of images, places, faces and icons, the young and much promising director Menelaos Karamaghiolis made an exemplary film. And it’s only his second one.
